Year In Review: Ten Things to be Thankful For

As the year begins its traditional run to the finish line, I think it's time to start looking back on the year that was. So for the next four weeks, we are gonna recap the year that was 2008.

Now I know Thanksgiving was last week, but it's never a bad time to be grateful. On that note, here are the top ten things I was thankful for this year:

10. Katy Perry: Admit it, the first time you heard "I Kissed A Girl" on the radio you thought to yourself "What is this?" The second time you heard it, you thought "Who is this?" And the third time, you thought, "I love this." I know that was my reaction. And then upon listening to the rest of "One Of the Boys," I realized this girl has some talent. If you haven't heard this album yet, put it on your bucket list.

9. Tina Fey's Scar: Who doesn't love Tina Fey? Whether its being absolutely amazing on her hit sitcom "30 Rock" or portraying vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin on "Saturday Night Live," this year has been Fey's year. And now we find out the secret behind her trademark scar: an anonymous attacker when she was 5. As sad as that is, the blemish gives her character. And it's cute in a sort of Jewel's snaggletooth kind of way.

8. "Storm Chasers": I have to thank my wife here for introducing me to this show on the Discovery Channel. The show follows two teams as they comb the countryside for tornadic activity hoping to obtain data on the natural monsters and catch some bad ass footage in the process.

7. "Rambo": I, like most of you, expected this film to stink. It didn't. Where it succeeded was in not taking itself seriously at all. Death, and there is plenty of it, was taken to an almost cartoonish level. Here's one interesting stat: Number of bad guys killed in "Rambo" I-III: 202. Number of bad guys killed in the latest installment: 232. Pretty much sums it up.

6. "Rosie Live" Getting Canceled: Did you get to see Rosie O'Donnell's one and only episode of her variety show? Neither did anyone else. And the reviews? Variety says: "If Rosie O'Donnell and company were consciously determined to strangle the rebirth of variety shows in the crib, they couldn't have done a better job of it than this pre-holiday turkey." The LA Times? "For weeks now NBC has seduced and tantalized with the promise of a cross between Carol Burnett and "Sonny and Cher." And this is what we get?"

5. The "Wanted" Movie Poster: Fanboy is always thankful for Angelina Jolie but I was especially thankful for the one-sheet that the producers of "Wanted" gave us. Angelina + tattoos + guns = Woo-hoo!

4. "Forgetting Sarah Marshall": This was truly my favorite comedy of the year. With a brilliantly funny script, terrific acting and a great story, it was hard to go wrong. P.S. Thank you also for introducing Russell Brand to America. The guy is comedy gold.

3. Mickey Rourke: You're going to want to see "The Wrestler." Rourke gives one of the saddest performances I've seen in a long time. You feel for him but more importantly you connect with him. As a child who grew up on wrestling and as a man who still tunes in from time to time, it's tough to know that the life of the fictional Randy "The Ram" is not so fictional to some of our childhood heroes.

2. Heath Ledger's performance in "The Dark Knight": The mystique surrounding the performance of the late actor launched the film to just over $996 million worldwide to date. The best part? The hype was warranted. Ledger may be in line for a posthumous Oscar for best supporting actor.

1. Season Four of "Lost": After a weak by "Lost" standards season three, fans needed a shot in the arm. Season four gave it to us. From the confirmation of time travel and moving the island, to the foreshadowing of Locke's death and the reunion of Penny and Desmond, season four was a non-stop mindblowing event.

Next week...the top ten performances by an actress in 2008.
