This non-Trekkie says run, don't walk, to theaters for 'Star Trek'

spock.2am.JPGLet me begin by saying I am in no way, shape or form, a Trekkie.

I have never seen an episode of any of the television series' nor have I caught a minute of the previous five "Star Trek" films. I am about as unbiased when it comes to the franchise as you can get.

With that in mind, I urge you to head to the theaters this weekend to see J.J. Abrams' latest masterpiece.
The film is spectacular. It's stunningly beautiful, perfectly acted and the story is not so far out there that the pedestrian sci-fi fan wouldn't understand the premise.

I won't give anything away, but our story is this: Eric Bana plays the Romulan, Nero, who is from the future. Nero is intent on killing Spock, the person he holds responsible for the annihilation of his race.

Yes, time travel is involved. It seems that Abrams doesn't have a project going that doesn't include some form of warp of the time-space continuum.

But in the ways of out-there geek stuff, that's about all there is. Well, aside from, you know, the whole thing taking place in space with phasers and teleportation and such.

And Zachary Quinto is perfection on screen. The star of NBC's "Heroes" could perhaps be the recipient of one of the best casting decisions in the history of film. With his dead-on look and emotional depravity, Quinto is Spock.

It's hard to find a flaw with "Trek." In the beginning, there are certain shots that are pretty jarring. The camera moves too fast and it seems Abrams is trying to fit too much into the shot, which leaves your eyes not knowing where to focus.

But after the first 20 minutes, that ceases to be a problem and you are left with a gorgeous, funny and riveting film, which I can pretty much assure you I will be seeing again.

Speaking of Abrams, the man is on some kind of roll, isn't he? The new "Trek" not Fringe_JaredHarris2-thumb-550x344-13179.jpgwithstanding, "Lost" has maintained the role of top Wednesday series for most of this season.

And now comes word that his Fox series, "Fringe," has been re-upped for a second season, which means 22 more episodes of the sci-fi drama.

Bonus "Fringe" news: Guest star Jared Harris, who plays bioterrorist David Robert Jones, has joined the cast of Bravo's "Mad Men" as Lane Pryce, the ad agency's chief financial officer.

"Life" is dead.

The quirky, cult-favorite detective show starring Damian Lewis on "NBC" has been axed after two seasons. This is a decision that Fanboy is very, very unhappy with. To all of my dedicated followers, get your pens out. Write letters to NBC. Tell them we want our show back.

chuck-again.jpgNBC, get ready. You just opened yourself up to a world of pain.

Congratulations, "Chuck" fans. It looks like you saved the day for your favorite spy.

While it hasn't been completely confirmed yet, it looks as if NBC's "Chuck" will get new life on a different night.

HELLO TOM

WHAT PLANET ARE YOU FROM? WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL THESE YEARS? WHY WOULD ANYONE IN YOUR POSITION BLOW THEIR CREDENTIALS RIGHT OUT THE WINDOW PRIOR TO TRYING TO COMPARE THE OLD WITH THE NEW. UNBIASED DOES NOT FIT, TRY IGNORANT ON THE SUBJECT. I AM PLEASED YOU ENJOYED THE FILM. YOU SHOULD CONTACT GUINNESS WORLD BOOKOF RECORDS AS THE ONLY PERSON IN THE UNITED STATES, POSSIBLY EUROPE AND JAPAN OVER THE AGE OF TEN WHO HAS WATCHED ZERO MINUTES OF THE FILM AND TV SERIES UP TO THIS FILM. JIM

Agmanru1 needs sedatives, stat!

Excellent review of the film. I'm a casual Trek fan, not part of the main trekkie crowd (I liked Enterprise, for example) but this movie was a fascinating reboot that just worked to the core. It is also the first Trek film I am actively suggesting my non-Trek friends and cohorts go see....it seems that Trek has managed to escape its own stiffling canon and hardcore fandom at last!

I am not a Trekkie either and it rocked!! It really felt more like old school Star Wars than Star Trek. It was action packed, exciting and not all overly dramatic. It was just a lot of fun! I want to go see it on IMAX now!

FYI, there were 10 previous Star Trek movies, not 5.
