This year, those cooking for the holidays may get a little help in the form of a grocery gift card from the Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in recent years has introduced youths around the state to the world of cooking and good nutrition through its "Xtreme Cuisine" program.
Now in its second year, the "Xtreme Cuisine Chef Demo Contest" provides teachers who conduct and document their own cooking class locally an opportunity to win a complimentary session with the Department's "Xtreme Cuisine" chef.
To enter, teachers must conduct an "Xtreme Cuisine" class with at least 10 students in which the students prepare at least two "Xtreme Cuisine" recipes using at least six total fresh Florida fruits and vegetables. The classes must use curriculum that can be ordered online at Florida-Agriculture.com/education/xtreme.htm. The class must be held between Sept. 30 and Dec. 31.
Classes can be organized by public and private school teachers, agriscience teachers, school food and nutrition managers and youth activity coordinators with County Cooperative Extension Offices, FFA chapters, Florida Farm Bureau groups, and other related areas. Time to stock up on celery and blue cheese as the Volusia Building Industry Association is gearing up for the "King of the Wing" Chicken Wing Competition planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, June 20 at Pelican Bay Country Club, 350 Pelican Bay Drive, Daytona Beach.
Area restaurants scheduled to participate include Arena, Chili's Daytona, Ale House, Gene's Steak House and the Original First Turn. Local celebrities will be on hand to judge who will be presented with a "King of the Wing" trophy. A "People's Choice Award" is also planned.
In addition to the competition, there will be children's activities including face painting. General admission is $10 (10 percent discount for pre-purchased tickets); ages 10 and younger are free.
