« WWE Royal Rumble Predictions | Main | Randy Orton vs. Shane McMahon? »

WWE Royal Rumble Reaction

This was an above-average Royal Rumble match. There were a few surprises, although the winner was not a surprise at all.
Of the seven surprise entrants I predicted, I got Dolph Ziggler, Mike Knox, William Regal and MVP correct. I got Manu, Sim Snuka and Umaga incorrect, as WWE went with Goldust, JTG and Hacksaw Jim Duggan. I am guessing Chavo Guerrero was pulled after WWE was able to secure RVD for the match. Here's my quick review of the Royal Rumble match:

Kozlov made a statement by tossing out The Great Khali single-handedly, then going toe-to-toe with Triple H. A key moment was when Triple H and Randy Orton were battling. Kane and The Undertaker sure did get huge pops for working together.

How could you not mark out for Santino Marella's quick exit and having Hacksaw Jim Duggan in the match? Did anyone else wonder how the Undertaker, Big Show and Kane would be eliminated when they were three of the final 10 or so remaining? You have to love seeing RVD in the match, and not just for the cheap hometown pop.

The Legacy (Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, Ted DiBiase), Big Show, Undertaker and HHH were a great final six. I'm not sure I like WWE hinting at an Undertaker-Big Show feud, although if it's just for No Way Out, that's fine.

It made sense to have The Legacy in the final four with HHH, showing power in numbers. It also made sense to have Orton standing tall at the end.

Edge defeats WWE Champion Jeff Hardy. REACT: OK, so Christian didn't show up. WWE is going the Matt Hardy route as he turned on Jeff Hardy. Edge gets a much-needed boost with his title win. A feud with HHH will give Smackdown something new.

World Heavyweight Champion John Cena defeats JBL. REACT: Having Cena win was simply the right thing. It allows Cena to defend his title at WrestleMania XXV. Even though he super-kicked JBL first, Michaels did what JBL told him to do by super-kicking Cena and putting JBL on top of Cena for the pin. It wasn't Michaels' fault Cena kicked out. I see WWE going away from JBL-Michaels and moving toward Undertaker-Michaels, which it hinted at earlier in the show. WWE may even have JBL make the Undertaker-Michaels match as a way of getting back at Michaels for not completing his request. Of course, WWE could go the Michaels-JBL route, but it seems like that's on the back-burner.

Melina defeats Women's Champion Beth Phoenix. REACT: OK, I was wrong in thinking Rosa Mendes might show up. But like I said, Melina winning will spice up the women's division.

ECW Champion Jack Swagger defeats Matt Hardy. REACT: With Hardy later turning on his brother, it made sense to have Swagger retain the title here. Having Hardy lose not only allowed Hardy to move on to a feud with Jeff Hardy, but it elevated Swagger as champion, especially to those who may not have heard of him because they don't watch ECW.

Finally, there are not many times I have perfectly predicted a WWE pay-per-view, let alone a Royal Rumble. But let it be known that I got all four matches corrected and had Orton as my Rumble winner. Does this mean this PPV was too predictable? Yes and no, maybe. But mark down a 5-0 for yours truly.

Tonight's Raw: I can't see Orton being "fired." He won the Rumble. You simply can't fire your Rumble winner. Expect Orton to have "legal action" filed against him in this angle, especially now that Vince McMahon has a "concussion."

WrestleMania XXV probable matches: Cena-Orton, Edge-HHH, Mickey Rourke-Jericho (there's always a celebrity match), Undertaker-Shawn Michaels, Jeff Hardy-Matt Hardy. That's five strong matches. Expect five or so more.

LATEST HEADLINES AND MY REACTS

WWE jumps on "The Wrestler" bandwagon, and next thing we know, Mickey Rourke will be at WrestleMania XXV. Rourke even hinted at coming after Chris Jericho. REACT: I'm glad WWE is now promoting the film. A Rourke-Jericho feud would generate tons of outside publicity.

Jeff Jarrett and Booker T not getting along. REACT: Shouldn't Jarrett have won this angle dispute?

Hardcore Holly has "no friends." REACT: Oh please, even though he's been known to keep to himself, he has some friends.
