Cubs Fall in Zambrano's Rehab Start
DUNEDIN - Cubs nation turned out at Dunedin Stadium to see Carlos Zambrano pitch for the Daytona Cubs (17-19), however, the Dunedin Blue Jays (15-20) touched up the big righty for four runs in his minor league rehab appearance. The 6-0 loss also included a seven inning, three hit performance by Blue Jays starter Kenny Rodriguez, who also struck out seven batters
Dunedin scored two runs in the opening frame against Zambrano. Big Z walked the first two batters he faced and then gave up an RBI single to Manny Rodriguez as well as Adam Loewen to give the Jays a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Jays scored two more runs against Zambrano in his final inning of work. With two outs, Zambrano issued his third walk of the game to catcher C.J. Ebarb. Third baseman Raul Barron then doubled to left field before Darin Mastrioanni singled in both of them to give the Jays a 4-0 lead.
Zambrano worked three-and-two-thirds innings of five hit baseball with four earned runs, three walks and a strike out. He threw 67 total pitches with 42 going for strikes and topped out at 94 mph. Afterwards, the Venezuelan said he felt good throughout but struggled with his release point, something he will work on during his next bullpen session before returning to the Cubs rotation on May 22 against the San Diego Padres.
A fifth run was tacked on in the sixth inning as Dan McDaniel issued a leadoff walk to Justin Jackson. The Blue Jays short stop advance to third on a passed ball and sacrifice fly, before a wild pitch allowed him to score.
The final run for Dunedin came in the eighth. Kevin Ahrens began the inning with a single to center. Adam Loewen followed with a double to move Ahrens to third base. The next batter would bring Jackson in on sacrifice fly to right field.
Game two between the Cubs and Blue Jays will begin at 7:00 p.m. Right hander Andrew Cashner will be on the hill for Daytona. Coverage of the game can be heard on AM1340 WROD and online at www.daytonacubs.com.
