D-Cubs lose Cashner, Samson and Keedy
DAYTONA BEACH - The Daytona Cubs have been an offensive force since the All-Star break, and now the lineup is set to get even better. The top overall prospect in the Chicago Cubs organization according to Baseball America, third baseman Josh Vitters, has been promoted from Peoria to the Advanced-A level. Along with Vitters, the Cubs will receive right handed pitcher Chris Carpenter, both of whom were All-Stars in the Midwest League. They will replace pitcher Andrew Cashner and second baseman Nathan Samson, who were promoted to Double-A Tennessee.
Vitters, a first round draft choice from 2007, was hitting .316 through 73 games to lead the Peoria Chiefs. He was also leading the team with 15 home runs and was near the top in hits, runs, and RBI. Drafted third overall out of high school, Vitters was signed to a $3.2-million contract. Following a short layoff with a hand injury, the right handed hitting Vitters went on to lead the Northwest League in doubles and put together a 26-game hit streak in 2008.
Carpenter, the Cubs 18th best prospect according to Baseball America, has had good success in 2009, as he posted a 4-3 record with a 2.44 ERA. On June 15 against Quad Cities, the Ohio-native threw a seven-inning, complete game shutout with just three hits allowed. The right hander was drafted in the third round of the 2008 draft out of Kent State and features a mid-90s fastball.
The additions do come as a result of some key losses to the Daytona roster. Starting pitcher Andrew Cashner, the third highest rated prospect for the Cubs, has thrown well since coming to Daytona from extended spring training, where he worked out an oblique injury. A strict pitch count prevented Cashner from factoring in any decisions while in Daytona, but had an ERA at 1.50 after twelve starts. The allowed just seven earned runs through 42 innings of work with a better than 2:1 strike-out-to-walk ratio.
Nathan Samson will join Cashner on the trip to Tennessee. The sure handed second baseman hit .251 in 61 games this season, was second in runs scored and first in walks with 24. The contact hitter struck out just ten times in 207 at-bats and displayed a great eye and discipline at the plate. Samson also committed just ten errors at in the field while being the Cubs every day second baseman. In Tennessee he will be reunited with former Ocala Forest High School and Daytona Cubs teammate Marquez Smith.
Daytona has also lost the services of Ryan Keedy, who was waived by the Cubs prior to Monday's game with Jupiter. Keedy appeared in 27 games for Daytona and hit .236 with 14 runs driven in. Keedy was a selected in the 16th round of the 2008 draft out of University of Alabama-Birmingham.

HATTERS RALLY LATE TO WIN AT CAMPBELL
Buies Creek, N.C. - The Stetson baseball team (19-24, 10-11 Atlantic Sun) rallied from a two-run deficit in the eighth inning to beat host Campbell (22-19, 6-14 A-Sun) 8-5 in the finale of a three-game Atlantic Sun conference series at Taylor Field on Saturday. Senior right fielder Jeremy Cruz (Miami, Fla.) went two for four with the go-ahead RBI double while junior shortstop/center fielder Casey Frawley (New Haven, Conn.) was four for five with two RBI and two runs scored. Frawley finished a home run shy of a cycle. Sophomore pitcher Nick Bohne (Melbourne, Fla.) tossed 1.2 no-hit innings for his second win of the season.
Trailing 5-3 after Camel first baseman Bryan Gana's two-out three-run homer off freshman starter Lindsey Caughel (Orlando, Fla.) in the bottom of the seventh, the Hatters wasted no time tying the game in the eighth as junior designated hitter Aaron Crittenden (Fort Myers, Fla.) led off with a single. He soon trotted home when freshman catcher Nick Rickles (Loxahatchee, Fla.) blasted his fifth home run of the season over the left field wall to make it a 5-5 ballgame.
Bohne entered the game in the bottom of the eighth in relief of freshman Ryan Sweat (Deltona, Fla.) with one out and runners on the corners; the righthander struck out left fielder Chris Bangi and second baseman Ellis Lowe to end the inning and give the Hatters a chance to win it in the ninth.
Stetson did just that as Frawley led off with a single to right and immediately scored when Cruz sent his 15th double of the season flying into the right center field gap, putting the Hatters ahead 6-5 against Campbell lefty Jonathan Lopez. Stetson scored a pair of insurance runs on RBI singles by sophomore shortstop Jacob DeGrom (DeLeon Springs, Fla.) and freshman second baseman Mark Jones (Palm Coast, Fla.) to go up 8-5; Bohne retired the side without a hit in the ninth as Stetson took the series two games to one.
Caughel enjoyed a strong day up until Gana's blast; he struck out five batters in 6.2 economical innings and only walked one. Rickles went two for four with a homer and a double while Cruz and sophomore third baseman Sean Emory (Miami, Fla.) had two hits as well.
Ryan Hamme had an outstanding day for the Camels both at the plate and on the mound as he went four for five with a run scored and an RBI while tossing seven strong innings. He entered in relief in the first with three runs already in for Stetson (Frawley two-run triple, Cruz RBI single) and proceeded to keep the Hatters off the scoreboard from then until the Rickles home run.
Stetson will be back in action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Melching Field when Volusia County rival Bethune-Cookman comes to town for a midweek contest. The FIU Golden Panthers will follow B-CU on Wednesday at the same time at Melching Field; Bill Topping calls all the action on Hatter Vision with Live Stats also available through www.GoHatters.com, the official online home of Stetson Athletics.

DeLand, Fla. -- With a berth to the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament at stake, the Stetson softball team pounded out 17 runs on 19 hits en route to a 8-0 and 9-1 doubleheader sweep over visiting Belmont Saturday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.
With the two victories, the Hatters (22-29, 5-15 Atlantic Sun) clinched the sixth and final seed for next month's tournament and qualified for postseason play for the 10th year
in a row.
Junior Katie Lawrence went 5-for-7 with a grand slam and seven RBI in the doubleheader to lead the offense, while Andrea Migliori also went deep in the first game.
Amanda Lindsey tossed a two-hit, five-inning shutout in game one to improve to 11-13 on the season. She struck out five and did not allow a runner past second base.
The Hatters set the tone early scoring two quick runs in the bottom of the first inning. Amy Joyce led off with a triple and scored on Migliori's 12th home run of the season, also her third round-tripper this week. Joyce finished the day 4-for-6 with four runs scored.
The Hatters added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-out, two-run double by Lawrence. Stetson plated four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. Joyce recorded an RBI single, Migliori and Amanda Bailey each drove in runs with fielder's choice ground balls, and Chelsey Trotto drew a bases loaded walk to force in the winning run.
That set the stage for a winner-take-all game two, and again Stetson jumped out to a quick lead. In the bottom of the second inning, Brittany Knipp doubled home Trotto and
Jessica Lokeinsky for a 2-0 Stetson advantage. After Joyce reached on an infield single, Belmont elected to walk Migliori intentionally to load the bases. Lawrence made that decision backfire as she skied a grand slam home run that hugged the third base line but stayed fair past the left field foul pole. It was her first career grand slam and it gave Stetson a 6-0 lead.
That was more than enough offense for senior Erica Demers, who allowed just one run and four hits while striking out eight. She improved to 10-14 on the season while picking up
career win number 77.
Larwence added an RBI single in the fourth, while Bailey and Trotto drove in the final two runs in the sixth.
Hannah Brenzie had an RBI double to lead the Bruins. Senior Sammi Parks (5-17) started both games for the Bruins and worked a total of 9.1 innings, striking out nine.
Despite having two conference games remaining, the Bruins (11-31, 3-15 A-Sun) can do no better than tie Stetson, and the Hatters own the tie-breaker with today's sweep.
Stetson will host the three-day, double-elimination tournament at Patricia Wilson Field May 7-9. Game times will be announced after all the seeds are determined. Video
broadcasts will be available on ASun.TV.
Notes: Seniors Amanda Bailey, Leo Carreno, Erica Demers, and Andrea Migliori was honored prior to the ballgame ... Migliori's 54 career home runs ties her with FAU's Niki Myers for second all-time in A-Sun history. |
