The Junior League of Daytona Beach will hold its annual Best Foot Forward project which will provide over 140 Title I Elementary School children back-to-school clothing and shoes that would otherwise be unaffordable. The event will take place Sunday September 13th from 5:30-8:30 at JC Penney in the Volusia Mall. As we have heard from school principals for the last four years, this provides invaluable self-confidence and a sense of "worth" to children who might otherwise be deficient in these key developmental categories. The Junior League coordinates with the schools to get permission slips for the outing, supplies a light snack for the children and, through strictly volunteer efforts, provides a "personal shopper" for each child. For more information on this event, please contact 386-299-8973 or juniorleaguedbnews@gmail.com
The Junior League of Daytona Beach, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, to developing the potential of women, and to improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. The Junior League of Daytona Beach reaches out to women of all races, religions and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to volunteerism.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) is honoring three Volusia County programs - the Citizens Academy, Trails Program and Liberty Web Assistant - with 2009 Achievement Awards. The awards, which recognize unique and innovative county programs, will be presented at NACo's annual conference in Nashville July 24 - 28.
The Citizens Academy is a hands-on awareness program designed to show citizens how county government operates. Participants spend more than 100 hours learning about the internal operations of county government through presentations, workshops, tours and job-shadowing. Topics include elections, growth management, public protection, property assessments and budgets.
Volusia County's Trails Program offers residents and visitors opportunities for outdoor recreation, transportation alternatives, and the enjoyment of nature. The county maintains four major trail systems: the Spring-to-Spring Trail, a paved trail that one day will traverse 26 miles from Gemini Springs Park to DeLeon Springs State Park with a connection to Putnam County; the 47-mile World's Most Famous Beach Trail; the North Peninsula Trail, a six-mile paved trail from Spanish Waters Boulevard to the Flagler County line; and the Ponce Inlet Trail, a paved trail that stretches three-and-a-half miles from Major Street to Lighthouse Point Park. Design has begun on the East Central Regional Rail Trail, which will allow users to travel from Enterprise to Edgewater and Titusville.
The Liberty Web Assistant is an intranet web portal containing a search interface to Liberty, the county's electronic document management system. With the exception of confidential information, the portal offers employees easy access to more than 3 million documents.
To be eligible for the NACo award program, an organization must offer a new service to county residents or fill in the gaps of existing service and have produced measurable results.
Founded in 1935, NACo represents the nation's 3,066 counties, advancing issues before the federal government, educating the public about county government, assisting counties in finding and sharing innovative solutions through education and research, and providing services to save counties and taxpayers money. For more information about NACo, visit www.naco.org.

Extended by Popular Demand: Take Out and From Gutter to Gallery exhibitions
at the Brevard Art Museum
MELBOURNE, FL - In response to the public's appreciation for the whimsical variety of Take Out and the graphic vibrancy of graffiti art in From Gutter to Gallery, the Brevard Art Museum has extended the run of both exhibitions through August 11, 2009.
Meet graffiti artist Cynic on Thursday, July 23 at 2:30 p.m. for a gallery walk and book signing. Cynic and other writers are featured in Miami Graffiti by James and Karla Murray, the first book documenting the graffiti scene in Miami.
Each Thursday through July, from 4 to 5 p.m., the Museum offers a free hands-on art activity for kids featuring a take out box, the basis of the exhibition currently on display. No registration required. Recommended for ages 3 and up.
"I've come to see Take Out four times and I still find surprises each time," remarked Rose Wiley, a Guild volunteer at the Museum.
Using a restaurant take out container as a jumping off point, artists were invited to create artwork with few limitations. This national exhibition allowed artists of all levels to participate. The one common denominator was the take out container. The range of responses demonstrates that though everyone started from the same beginning, each journey was unique.
About the Brevard Art Museum:
The Brevard Art Museum is a non-profit organization supported in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs; the Florida Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts; Brevard County through the Brevard Cultural Alliance; the Brevard County Tourist Development Council; and by members of the Brevard Art Museum.

DAYTONA BEACH - The Daytona Cubs have been an offensive force since the All-Star break, and now the lineup is set to get even better. The top overall prospect in the Chicago Cubs organization according to Baseball America, third baseman Josh Vitters, has been promoted from Peoria to the Advanced-A level. Along with Vitters, the Cubs will receive right handed pitcher Chris Carpenter, both of whom were All-Stars in the Midwest League. They will replace pitcher Andrew Cashner and second baseman Nathan Samson, who were promoted to Double-A Tennessee.
Vitters, a first round draft choice from 2007, was hitting .316 through 73 games to lead the Peoria Chiefs. He was also leading the team with 15 home runs and was near the top in hits, runs, and RBI. Drafted third overall out of high school, Vitters was signed to a $3.2-million contract. Following a short layoff with a hand injury, the right handed hitting Vitters went on to lead the Northwest League in doubles and put together a 26-game hit streak in 2008.
Carpenter, the Cubs 18th best prospect according to Baseball America, has had good success in 2009, as he posted a 4-3 record with a 2.44 ERA. On June 15 against Quad Cities, the Ohio-native threw a seven-inning, complete game shutout with just three hits allowed. The right hander was drafted in the third round of the 2008 draft out of Kent State and features a mid-90s fastball.
The additions do come as a result of some key losses to the Daytona roster. Starting pitcher Andrew Cashner, the third highest rated prospect for the Cubs, has thrown well since coming to Daytona from extended spring training, where he worked out an oblique injury. A strict pitch count prevented Cashner from factoring in any decisions while in Daytona, but had an ERA at 1.50 after twelve starts. The allowed just seven earned runs through 42 innings of work with a better than 2:1 strike-out-to-walk ratio.
Nathan Samson will join Cashner on the trip to Tennessee. The sure handed second baseman hit .251 in 61 games this season, was second in runs scored and first in walks with 24. The contact hitter struck out just ten times in 207 at-bats and displayed a great eye and discipline at the plate. Samson also committed just ten errors at in the field while being the Cubs every day second baseman. In Tennessee he will be reunited with former Ocala Forest High School and Daytona Cubs teammate Marquez Smith.
Daytona has also lost the services of Ryan Keedy, who was waived by the Cubs prior to Monday's game with Jupiter. Keedy appeared in 27 games for Daytona and hit .236 with 14 runs driven in. Keedy was a selected in the 16th round of the 2008 draft out of University of Alabama-Birmingham.
