OK. Soap junkies, I can say that since I'm one of them, the event of the year is almost here -- ABC-SOAPnet Super Soap Weekend this Saturday and Sunday at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Lake Buena Vista.
It's the last year as ABC moves to holding events in more cities nationwide. It's also my first and I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to meet stars from All My Children, One Life to Live and General Hospital.
I've already talked to three of them -- Cameron Mathison, "Ryan" of All My Children; Kassie DePaiva "Blair" of One Life to Live and Kimberly McCullough, "Robin" of General Hospital.
Mathison, who will host some of the events, joked about how he had no rhythm before Dancing with the Stars last year and how he learned to move in ways he never knew.He said "having accomplished that, I feel I can almost tackle anything." DePaiva talked a little about her son's recent performance on All My Children and her passion for helping people who are hard of hearing. Her 11-year-old son, J.Q., has cochlear implants.
McCullough, who grew up on General Hospital, shared how great it was to act recently with former stars from the 80s on General Hospital: Night Shift.
"There was something magical that happened in the 80s with the comradery of the actors. It was really nice to relive that," she told me.
Mathison also alluded to a "huge twist coming up" in Ryan's story line for the search for his daughter that "sends everybody reeling."
"Whenever (Ryan and Greenlee) get together bad things seem to happen," he told me.
I can't wait to find out more scoops and insights on the stars. I've been watching GH for more than 20 years, catching the show with my mom after school before homework. I now try to catch all three of the ABC soaps on SOAPnet after work when life or primetime shows don't get in the way. My high school friend, Kristy Somerton, formerly Kristy Lovett, of Port Orange, who still watches GH when she's not raising her children, will be on hand snapping photos and meeting GH stars.
I've already received some pointers from Port Orange resident Sandy Zugaro, 53, who is an expert -- attending about 10 Super Soaps. She has autographs and photos of more than 40 ABC stars. She's hoping to meet Darnell Williams, "Jesse," who recently returned after a 20-year absence from the show. She watches all three of the soaps.
She, like I, have experienced our fair share of teasing from friends about soaps. But like she told a friend, it's no different than her being a hockey fan. Her friend agreed if a bunch of hockey players got together for an event with fans "she'd be obsessed too." I second that.
My boyfriend, who watches "The Young and the Restless" says, that those who make fun of soaps and say it's just for women or the acting is bad, have never seen the shows. If they did, they'd be hooked.
