Two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart, Carl Edwards, Darrell Waltrip and last year's Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman were among some of the drivers along with Boris Said and Martin Truex Jr. They were at the third-annual Miccosukee Resort & Gaming "Hot Rods & Reels NASCAR drivers' tournament to raise money for the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. Gwynn, a National Hot Rod Association champion, lost his left arm and was paralyzed from the waist down in 1990 when his dragster hit a wall during a London exhibition.
He was there to give Daytona Beach pre-kindergartner, Alyssa Hagstrom, a $26,000 power wheelchair. Alyssa, who turns 5 on Valentine's Day, was born with a rare muscle disorder that prevents her from walking and having full movement of her arms.
Stewart and Edwards talked about Gwynn and how special he and his foundation are for helping children with disabilities become more independent.
"It's an honor to be a part of it," Edwards said.
Read more about Alyssa, who attends the local Easter Seals Charter School, and the foundation, in Monday's Daytona Beach News-Journal.
