He is not an illusion

ACC COPPERFIELD 1.JPGNo rabbits need apply for jobs with magician David Copperfield.

"For magic to be relevant, it has to evolve so it keeps up with, or even surpasses, the best film and theater," Copperfield said in a press release. "I want to base my work on what people really dream about. Most of us don't dream of pulling a rabbit out of a hat."

Copperfield will perform his new touring show, "Grand Illusion," on Jan. 27 at Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach.

The show "was partly inspired by an unfulfilled wish of my grandfather's that a lot of people share: winning the lottery and finally owning that one special thing you always dreamed of," Copperfield said. "We call it an 'intimate' evening of grand illusion partly because it's interactive.
The show "was partly inspired by an unfulfilled wish of my grandfather's that a lot of people share: winning the lottery and finally owning that one special thing you always dreamed of," Copperfield said. "We call it an 'intimate' evening of grand illusion partly because it's interactive.

"In one of the pieces, the audience discovers how to predict lottery numbers that will come up that night. They get to participate in illusions that blur the line between magic and reality."

A native of Metuchen, N.J., Copperfield began performing professionally at age 12, and by 16 he was teaching a course in magic at New York University. After performing in his first TV special in 1977, his fame grew via 17 more specials over the years as he appeared to make the Statue of Liberty disappear, walk through the Great Wall of China, levitate himself across the Grand Canyon and escape from Alcatraz.

Hmmmm ... so, David, you base your magic on "what people really dream about"? OK, we'll take your word on that when it comes to other bits in your current show, such as:

"Killer." In this segment, Copperfield performs sleight-of-hand, close-up magic with a "lethal black African scorpion."
"Squeezebox." According to his press packet, Copperfield "takes liposuction to a whole new level" as he "gets squeezed into a bite-sized piece that could fit into a Prada shoe box."
"Man Versus Steel" -- One of Copperfield's most famous illusions was walking through the Great Wall of China. For this trick, he "floats through solid steel, proving that dreams can dissolve barriers."
"Thirteen" -- For this illusion, Copperfield makes 13 audience members, "chosen entirely at random," vanish. The 13 reappear "instantly, in the most surprising of places."

Copperfield's press release does issue one caveat: Any or all of these illusions are subject to disappear from his current show at any time.
