Forry's monsters go on auction block
As a fanboy before the term was invented, we were die hard fans of Famous Monsters of Filmland, that seminal magazine of the '60s and '70s that reveled in everything monstrous.
Its editor and uber-fan, Forrest J Ackerman -- Uncle Forry to many of us, including Gene Simmons and Steven Spielberg -- passed away in December at age 92.
Over the years, Forry had compiled more than 300,000 pieces of sci-fi and horror film memorabilia, including the Count Dracula ring worn by Bela Lugosi in the 1931 classic film "Dracula."
Now you can own a piece of this eerie history as Forry's collection goes on the auction block in late April. Profiles in History is handling the sale, as well as many others featuring cool slices of Hollywood history. Check out their Web site for more info at profilesinhistory.com.

"Yes we can."
Yes, that catch phrase became a theme of Barack Obama's presidential campaign. But 40 years earlier, soul man Lee Dorsey sang "Yes we can" on his album and song of the same title, released in 1970.
Dorsey's funky, almost-forgotten, New Orleans-spiced gem is just one of the many treasures on "Let Freedom Sing! Music of the Civil Rights Movement." The three-disc, 58-song set includes such classics as Billie Holiday's profoundly disturbing "Strange Fruit," Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" and Aretha Franklin's "Respect" (which takes on a new light when viewed through the history of the movement).
And the set resurrects such gems as Josh White's "Uncle Sam Says," Chuck D's "The Pride" and Nina Simone's "Mississippi Goddam," a blistering indictment written in the bouncy, incongruous style of a show tune.
"Let Freedom Sing" is in stores now, just in time for Black History Month.
