ATTEND
Steven Tyler camps out
Dear Mom and Dad,
Camp is going great! This guy Steven Tyler is teaching me how to wear scarves and scream "Dude looks like a lady" and the meaning of the phrase "can't catch me 'cause the rabbit done died" ....
OK, if that sounds like a fantasy it's because it is -- it's the next session of Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp. That's the "camp" in which mere mortals pay to spend a week rehearsing, recording and performing with real, live rock stars.
Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler headlines the next one, to be held April 29-May 3 in Hollywood. Also at the camp: Duff McKagan of Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver fame, Todd Rundgren, Steve Lukather (Toto), Bruce Kulick (Kiss), Alan White (Yes) and Elliot Easton (The Cars).
The price tag? A mere $7,999. Get more info at rockcamp.com or call 1-888-762-2263.
LISTEN
Lookey dookey at Florida's pop past
Mention Florida rock and pop music, and most people will default to such icons as Tom Petty, the Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
But back in the early 1970s, a Tampa band called White Witch donned hippe-freaky face paint and did the glam rock thing. An R&B wild man named King Coleman rattled the Sunshine State with his song "Lookey Dookey."
And Florida was rocked by such long-gone artists as Dr. T and the Undertakers, the Shaggs and the band that scooped White Witch (and Kiss) with a face-painting shtick, the appropriately named Painted Faces.
These Florida artists and others of yore have found a home on the program "Florida Rocks Again!" hosted by St. Augustine radio personality Mal Thursday. Listen to the program, including an extensive archive, at garagepunk.com.
