Truckers drive by George Jones' place
Southern rock die-hards are holding their rebel yells until Lynyrd Skynyrd releases "God & Guns" on Sept. 29. But the cow punks and alt-country types lurking below the Mason-Dixon Line are rejoicing over this news: The Drive-By Truckers will release "The Fine Print," a collection of previously unreleased oddities and rarities from 2003-2008, on Sept. 1.
For a sneak preview, check out "George Jones Talkin' Cell Phone Blues" at drivebytruckers.com. With grungy guitars, peppy pedal steel and twang-soaked vocals that make the Dukes of Hazard sound like New Yorkers, the song is a love letter to ol' George, pleading with the country music legend to be careful. If George doesn't get his, er, stuff together, the Truckers sing, he'll be "singing duets with Tammy again."
Along with name-checking Jones' late ex-wife, the Truckers' also warn George not to repeat that riding lawnmower incident.

Ellison bares teeth on DVD
Writer Harlan Ellison did NOT shove an obnoxious fan down an elevator shaft. But, he confesses to friend and admirer Robin Williams on a new DVD, Ellison did indeed mail a dead gopher to a publishing executive.
Those are just a few of the shenanigans revealed on "Dreams with Sharp Teeth," a new DVD documentary on the writer who has won dozens of science fiction writing awards, but who loathes his work being pigeonholed as science fiction or "sci-fi."
Harlan gets plenty of face time, which he uses to rant about "media whores," jaywalkers and his love-hate relationship with overzealous fans. (Hint: Don't ask Harlan a question if you happen to encounter him in a men's bathroom.)
The DVD includes a 50-minute conversation between Ellison and fellow writer Neil Gaiman, who sums up his friend and mentor this way: "What Harlan is working on is really this huge piece of performance art called Harlan Ellison."

U2 goes crazy with animated video
U2 continues to tour Europe, looking to reclaim its "World's Biggest Rock Band" title by deploying the biggest set ever created for a rock tour.
Meanwhile, the band has revealed that rarest of entities on its Web site, u2.com: a video that does not include singer Bono's mug! Instead, the vid for "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" is an animated piece.
Has Bono been cured of his flaming megalomania? Maybe his band mates approved the video without St. Bono's knowledge.
